Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz create Open Era history with 3rd Grand Slam final of 2025 at US Open, break multiple records

The Jannik Sinner-Carlos Alcaraz era of men’s tennis has officially taken full flight after the superstar duo’s sensational Grand Slam season in the 2025 calendar year. The World No.1 and 2 booked their third successive Grand Slam final meeting of the year at the US Open, erasing the trail of the Big 3 on the calendar after 22 years.
For the first time since 2003, a calendar year has passed without Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal reaching a Grand Slam final. The 24-time champion Djokovic was wiped out with clinical precision by Alcaraz, who stormed into the final without dropping a set at Flushing Meadows. Meanwhile, a slightly wavering Sinner booked his fifth consecutive Slam final in a four-setter, pipping Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second semi-final at the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Friday night. Bracing up for a third successive Slam final this year, Alcaraz and Sinner thereby broke a plethora of records.
Jannik Sinner: The Italian conqueror
- 300* – Sinner notched up his 300th career singles victory on the ATP tour. His last 100 wins have come from only 110 matches, holding a jaw-dropping 90.9 success percentage.
- 87* – Sinner surpassed compatriot Nicola Pietrangeli as the Italian player with most wins in all Grand Slams with his 87th victory.
- 5 – Sinner became only the third men’s singles player in history to reach five successive Grand Slams after Jimmy Connors (1974-75) and Bjorn Borg. (1978-79)
- 24 – Aged 24 years and 19 days, Sinner broke Roger Federer’s record to become the youngest man to reach all four Grand Slam finals in a calendar year, surpassing the Swiss legend’s record for 27 wins at the age of 25y 19d in 2006.
- 27 – Sinner now has the joint second-most hard-court Grand Slam wins in succession, equalling Novak Djokovic (27). Only Roger Federer has won more consecutive hardcourt Slams, with 40 wins between 2005 and 2008.

- 22 – Aged 22y 123d, Carlos Alcaraz is the second youngest player to reach the US Open final without dropping a set in the Open Era after Jim Courier (21y 8d) in 1991. Alcaraz has the opportunity to become the first man to win the Slam without dropping a set.
- 3 – Carlos Alcaraz is the third youngest man to reach 7 Grand Slam finals in the Open Era behind Bjorn Borg (8 at 22y 83d) and Rafael Nadal (7 at 22y 20d).

The Alcaraz vs Sinner collision course
Staggeringly, either Alcaraz or Sinner have been part of all eight Grand Slams in the last two calendar years since 2024.
1 – Sinner and Alcaraz became the first men’s pair in Open Era history to reach at least three Grand Slam finals in a calendar year.
3* – Sinner and Alcaraz are also the first pair since Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal to feature in three successive Grand Slam finals, starting with the Australian Open earlier this year. Nadal and Djokovic clashed in four successive Slam finals between Wimbledon 2011 and the French Open in 2012.
