Freestyle dressage is one of the most beautiful things you would see on a sports field. The discipline showcases both the athletic abilities of the horse as well as its willingness to listen to commands and stick to its training.

But there have been very few performances in the field as stunning as that of Blue Hors Matine and its rider Andreas Helgstrand at the finals of the WEG 2006 Freestyle Dressage. In fact, Matine was so much on song at the show that it wowed everyone with its command of the routine. The grey mare showcased a routine that would have put Michael Jackson to shame. Actually, the moon walk was among the few things the mare did not do, or did it. It was at its playful best and won medals and hearts. So much so that it was soon became famous as the dancing grey mare.

Despite its quick rise to fame and success, Matine had a relatively short career after slipping from the trailer at the 2007 World Cup Finals in Las Vegas. By 2009, after repeated attempts to bring her back to form failed, Blue Hors announced that it was retiring the mare.

However, that one show in 2006 was enough to make Matine a part of dressage forlklore.

The mare had to be put down in early 2010 after another paddock accident that broke her leg.
