Home to forests, waterfalls, temples and monuments, Chhattisgarh is a much-loved tourist destination in India. Among the state’s many wonders is the famous ‘Ulta Pani’ in Mainpat, a natural phenomenon that challenges conventional understanding and is bound to leave you scratching your head.
A recent video shared by @jethi_vlogs on Instagram showcases Ulta Pani, a stream that seems to flow against gravity. The video captures Ulta Pani’s claim to fame as the vlogger drops a leaf into the stream and shows it drifting upwards.
Is the water defying gravity?
Contrary to initial impressions, the phenomenon can be attributed to the principle of ‘siphon action’, a well-known concept in fluid mechanics. This process involves the movement of water from lower elevations to higher grounds, seemingly defying gravity, before succumbing to its pull.
In the case of Ulta Pani, the landscape plays a crucial role in amplifying this illusion. Situated between two hills, the stream capitalises on the natural dynamics of wind and terrain to create a vacuum effect, drawing water upwards with remarkable force.

The longer stretch of the stream between the hills initiates the siphon action, creating a pressure differential that leads to water being drawn into the shorter section. This rapid movement of water against the gradient gives the illusion that gravity is being defied.
The video received thousands of likes on Instagram. One user said, “India is not for Newton’s.” Another added, “That’s not possible. It’s optical illusion and it happens on multiple locations. Even i had doubt on my survey instrument. Multiple times.” A third user went on to say, “If gravity was working reverse then you would not be on earth but in the sky.” A fourth user commented, “Its illusion due to mountains near by.. and topography.”
