On October 16, loco pilot JD Das and his assistant Umesh Kumar, running the Kamrup Express from Guwahati to Lumding, averted a major mishap by saving a herd of around 60 elephants crossing the railway tracks between Habaipur and Lamsakhang. The loco pilots applied emergency brakes after they were alerted by an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based Intrusion Detection System (IDS).

The viral video shows several elephants, adults and calves, crossing the railway track. “Look at the elephants. It’s a herd,” a man says in the video. Several men burn firecrackers to make the herd cross the railway track faster.

Sharing the video on X, IAS Supriya Sahu hailed the loco pilots for their immediate action in saving the elephants. “Incredible sight! A big shout-out to Loco Pilot Das and Assistant Loco Pilot Umesh Kumar of the 15959 Kamrup Express for their swift and heroic action on 16th October in saving a herd of about 60 elephants crossing the railway tracks between Habaipur and Lamsakhang by applying emergency brakes,” she wrote.
