Nine people were killed in a shooting incident in Bekkersdal township. (Photo: X/@PressTV) South Africa Shooting Today Update: At least 9 people were killed and 10 others injured in a shooting in Bekkersdal, a township near Johannesburg, South African police said on Sunday, according to Reuters.
The attack took place about 40 kilometres southwest of Johannesburg. Police said the motive for the shooting was not immediately clear.
Police in Bekkersdal township did not immediately respond to Reuters request for comment.SABC revised the death toll down in an X post after initially reporting 10 had been killed.
“Some victims were randomly shot in the streets by unknown gunmen,” police said in a statement quoted by CBS News.
Brigadier Brenda Muridili, a police spokesperson in Gauteng province, said authorities were still working to identify the victims.
Police said the shooting happened near a tavern or informal bar in Bekkersdal, an area close to several major gold mines. The site was said to be operating without a licence.
Those who were wounded were taken to hospital for treatment, police said.
The incident is the second mass shooting reported in South Africa this month. On December 6, gunmen attacked a hostel near Pretoria, killing 12 people, including a three-year-old child.
South Africa has one of the highest violent crime rates in the world. Police continue to investigate the Bekkersdal shooting and have not announced any arrests.
