The newlyweds received a digitally verified certificate, complete with their photograph, on the same day—a sign of how technology is transforming even the most traditional ceremonies.

A video capturing Lavanya and Vishnu completing their marriage registration online has gone viral on social media, showing the couple smiling as they verify their KYC digitally and sparking widespread curiosity and admiration.

This trend is rapidly gaining momentum across the state. Between January 2024 and September 2025, Kerala saw 1,44,416 marriages registered, of which 62,524 were completed online. Kerala’s digital marriage registration is facilitated through the K-SMART platform, developed by the Information Kerala Mission (IKM). The system allows couples to verify their identities using Aadhaar-based OTPs or email authentication, removing the need for a physical visit to the local office. Once verified, couples can download their digitally authenticated certificates immediately, as reported by India Today.

Santhosh Babu, CMD of IKM, described the initiative as “a historic milestone in digital governance.” He added, “Couples can register their marriage from anywhere in the world and at any time. Even those working on ships in the middle of the ocean have used this facility.”

K-SMART is part of Kerala’s broader e-governance vision, offering services ranging from birth and death registrations to property tax payments and building permits, ensuring residents enjoy greater convenience and transparency.
