Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh etched his name in history on December 12 by defeating reigning champion Ding Liren to become the youngest-ever world chess champion. His incredible achievement has sparked celebrations worldwide, including a unique tribute.
Kathak dancers Anushka Chandak and Maitreyee Nirgun brought one of Gukesh’s most iconic chess moves to life through their mesmerising performance. The video, which has gone viral, demonstrates how classical Indian dance can embody the strategy and precision of chess.
Dressed in symbolic attire—Chandak in white and Nirgun in chocolate brown, representing the chessboard’s two opposing sides—the duo performed a dynamic routine that captured the intense energy and brilliance of the game. Every movement and rhythm mirrored the calculated moves and sharp counterplays of the championship match.
Sharing their pride for Gukesh, the dancers wrote, “We are so so proud of you @gukesh.official,” in the caption accompanying the viral clip.
