Nearly a week after a headless body of a woman was found floating in a drain near Sector 82 in Noida, police are yet to identify her, officers said on Wednesday. No concrete lead in the case has been found even as footage from 100 CCTV cameras have been scanned and records of 50 missing women from Noida and nearby areas have been vetted, according to the police.

On November 6, police had received information about the body around 10.30 am. “We received the information about the body of an unidentified woman found in a drain near Sector 82 cut. Acting immediately, local police arrived at the scene and the body was pulled from the drain,” police had said. The woman’s age is estimated to be around 30-35 years. The body was found in a naked state with head and hands severed.

A day after the body was found, Sumit Shukla, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP), Noida, had told The Indian Express that five police teams have been constituted to identify her and trace those involved in her death. “We are scanning CCTV footage and collecting forensic evidence to ascertain the sequence of events,” he said.

Officers have said that the probe has since been broadened and footage from over 100 CCTV cameras — installed in nearby areas — have since been scanned so far while forensic experts have collected samples from the spot for examination.

As part of a wider search, the Noida Police has also examined records of 50 missing women from Noida and nearby cities, including Delhi, Ghaziabad, Bulandshahr, Aligarh and Agra, but no match has been found so far. Forty-five teams have been formed to verify details across 100 police stations in these districts.

The woman, said police, was around 5 feet tall and was found wearing only an anklet — a photo of which has been circulated among police units and families of missing persons’. Despite the drain being in one of the busiest localities of Noida, there was no CCTV coverage at the exact spot. Police said that they are also tracing two suspicious vehicles that have been reportedly seen in the area around the time of the incident.

Senior officers said they are likely to address a press conference soon to share updates on the investigation and the progress made so far.
