Who is Mohamed Irfan? All about Chennai YouTuber in trouble for revealing unborn child’s gender

On May 18, Ifran shared a video that showed him and his pregnant wife visiting a hospital in Dubai.

Mohamed Irfan, Chennai’s popular YouTuber, landed in controversy after he revealed the gender of his unborn child in a video. In a series of now-deleted videos, Irfan disclosed he travelled to Dubai with his wife and that she underwent a prenatal sex determination test.

Who is Mohamed Irfan?

Food vlogger Mohamed Irfan rose to prominence with his stint in the cooking reality show Cooku with Comali Season 5. Irfan has two Instagram handles, Irfan’s View and Irfan’s View Official with 9,81,000 and 1.4 million followers, respectively. He launched his YouTube channel in 2009 and has shared as many as 2,445 videos, gaining 4.29 million subscribers.

Irfan made his acting debut with actor Vijay in the 2023 film ‘Leo’. Sharing a picture with the Tamil star on Instagram, Irfan wrote, “Meeting @actorvijay in Leo shoot for the first time! One of the Super exciting time of this year. Had some convos with him, I felt super proud when he recognised me. A person who I looked up to have seen my contents is a big achievement for me! I grew up watching his movies, this was special! More about this in today’s video sharp at 3 in Irfansview! Huge thank to @jagadish_palanisamy for making this happen!”

In April 2024, Irfan and his wife Aaliya announced they would soon welcome their first child. “Our family is about to Grow!!! We are happy to announce that WE ARE PREGNANT. Will we have a he? Or will we have a she? BTW I want a girl baby,” the YouTuber wrote.

The couple got married on May 14, 2023.

On May 18, Ifran shared a video that showed him and his pregnant wife visiting a hospital in the UAE city. “When I was born in 1993, my mother knew my gender. It was not a big issue then. It was stopped because many mad people were discriminating against the female gender,” the YouTuber said in the video, as reported by The News Minute.

After flying back to India, the couple hosted a ‘gender reveal’ party in Chennai and announced the gender of their unborn child in the presence of their relatives. The party had a pink and blue theme and included some television stars. The ‘gender reveal’ video was shared on May 19, The Hindu reported.

Irfan also shared a post on Instagram that showed the envelope with ‘Baby’s Gender Inside’ written on it. “This much excitement was not there even when buying a new car, nor when coming to a new house. I am just super super duper excited for the revealing day with @iasifanazir. Alhamdulillah for everything! Girl papa ku manifesting,” he wrote on Instagram.

While some of his followers congratulated Irfan, others criticised him for making this move. “You are unnecessarily giving ideas to people who will misuse this ! Don’t you feel it’s a social responsibility not to share this atleast! Since you influence so many people,” a user commented. “Super happy for you. congratulations,” another user wrote.

Soon after the video grabbed attention on social media, the Tamil Nadu director of medical and rural health services issued a show cause notice to Irfan. He has been accused of violating the Pre Conception and Pre–Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act, 1994. According to reports, the health department further directed the Tamil Nadu Police’s Cyber Crime unit to take down the video from social media.
