Netizen shares photo of helmetless cops riding a scooter, Mumbai police respond

In Mumbai, both riders of a two-wheeler are required to wear helmets or will have to pay a fine of Rs 500 each.

Not wearing a helmet while riding a two-wheeler is an offence in Mumbai and police often advise people about the protection helmets provide. But a Twitter user has shared a photo of two police personnel riding a scooter without helmets.

‘MH01ED0659 What if we travel like this?? Isn’t this a traffic rule violation? @MumbaiPolice @mieknathshinde @Dev_Fadnavis,” Rahul Barman (@RahulB__007) tweeted on Saturday along with the photo. The tweet soon got hundreds of likes.

Police impose a fine of Rs 500 each on both the driver and the pillion rider if they are found riding without helmets. Repeated violations can result in the suspension of driving licences for three months.

Replying to Barman’s tweet, the Mumbai traffic police asked him to share the location of the road where the photo was taken and Barman wrote, “Eastern Express Highway (Dadar)”. Police replied in an update, “We have shared this with a senior official of the Matunga traffic division for necessary stern actions.”

Many commenters argued that the traffic police could issue an e-challan directly as the number plate of the police personnel’s scooter was visible in the photo. “U can see number plate and issue e-challan. While imposing fine and collecting bribe from normal people do you ask for their location? U simply click their image and issue challans right? 😡 ” wrote a Twitter user.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Mumbai police tweeted that the offending officers have been issued a chalan of Rs 500.
