A Gurgaon resident’s candid post on Reddit about confronting a luxury car owner for littering has struck a chord online, sparking a wider conversation about civic sense and entitlement.

In his account, the man recalled sitting in his car on Golf Course Road when he saw a woman in her late 40s toss a used paper plate and napkin out of her Mercedes E-Class.

Surprised at the blatant littering, he walked over and asked her politely to pick it up. What happened next caught him off guard. “So?? I don’t see a dustbin around, and I can’t litter my car. You may not know, but it costs a lot to get a car dry-cleaned,” she allegedly shot back before rolling up the window. Her driver then asked the man to leave.

“The irony? People who flaunt status, luxury, and education often fail at the most basic form of civic sense,” the Redditor wrote, adding that being wealthy “doesn’t make you elite” and that “true class is in respecting your surroundings.”

The post has gone viral, drawing praise for his courage and sparking hundreds of comments from people sharing their own experiences of similar behaviour. One Redditor wrote, “Many people here got rich by selling their land, not by education. Civic sense is something they can’t buy.”

Another user said, “Age is not a guarantee of maturity, Education is not a guarantee of civility, Wealth is not a guarantee of character.” A third user was even harsher: “99% of the rich are flashy idiots. Her car is probably on a massive loan scheme. People who are really rich and wealthy will never behave like this.”

Some felt the only way forward is public accountability. “Naming and shaming is the only option we have now,” commented one user.
