‘Secure IIT, get 40% of my salary’: Man’s college contract with son has Reddit in splits
The contract also states that if the son fails to get into a good university, he will have to pay 100 per cent of his salary to his father till retirement.

Many students across the country dream of securing a spot in prestigious institutions like IITs, NITs, or BITS to shape their future. Social media is often flooded with posts about the tough journey to these top colleges, but one particular story has recently left people both amused.
A Reddit user, Upset_Design_8656, shared a rather unusual contract drawn up by his father. The post, made on the subreddit r/JEENEETards, revealed a handwritten note that detailed a high-stakes deal tied to the son’s college admission.
The note laid out two very clear yet contrasting conditions. The father promised that if his son secured admission to a renowned institute like IIT, NIT, IIIT, or BITSAT, he would hand over 40 per cent of his salary every month until retirement to the son. However, if the son ended up in what the father considered a “lower-tier college,” the tables would turn – the son would be required to give 100 per cent of his salary to his father until his own retirement.
The post quickly went viral, with the photo of the handwritten agreement (with names blurred) sparking laughter and debate online.

Reacting to it, one user said, “Uncle LIC agent hain kya itni khatarnak scheme nikal rhe (Is uncle an LIC agent or what? He’s coming up with wild schemes.)”
Another user wrote, “Fees bharenge fir bolenge beta 40% tumhari fees bharne mai hi ja rahe hai (He’ll pay the fees, and then say 40% of our earnings are going into your fees alone).”
“Bro don’t get demotivated by these comments… save this paper, maybe you both can laugh about this in the future,” commented one user.
The original Reddit poster jumped in to clear the air, explaining that such written agreements are a family tradition. “Actually it’s a light mood declaration which we often give to each other in written, I gave him a declaration in Class 10 that I will score above 90% and then sometime he give me a declaration in written that he will take me to a trip if wake up early, so it’s just healthy guys, we often make promises to our parents but in my dad’s case he wants everything in written,” he wrote.
