As heavy rain lashes Delhi-NCR, videos of severe waterlogging and traffic snarls fill the Internet

The rain triggered severe waterlogging, resulting in traffic congestion in several areas in Delhi-NCR.

Delhi and the National Capital Region saw heavy rainfall early Thursday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for the day. According to IMD data, showers began around 2.00 am and continued into the morning hours.

Among the areas that recorded the highest rainfall by 8.30 am were Ayanagar (57.4 mm), Palam (49.4 mm), Mayur Vihar (17.5 mm), and Ridge (17.4 mm). The IMD has forecast light to moderate rain to persist throughout the day. The rain triggered severe waterlogging, resulting in traffic congestion in several areas.

One of the viral videos captures knee-deep water on Outer Ring Road in the Subroto Park area with vehicles, such as buses, cars, and SUVs, moving at a slow pace due to waterlogging. Sharing the video, ANI wrote, “Waterlogging witnessed on Outer Ring Road in Subroto Park area after rain swept over parts of Delhi earlier this morning.”

Issuing an advisory, the Delhi Traffic Police said, “Due to the recent rains causing waterlogging at GTK Depot, Jahangirpuri, and Adarsh Nagar, traffic on old GT Road is likely to be severely affected. Commuters are advised to avoid taking old GT Road.”

“Traffic is affected on Ring Road in the carriageway from Ashram towards Moolchand due to breakdown of MGV near Nehru Nagar,” it added.

Sharing a video capturing a flood-like situation in Delhi, a user wrote, “Delhi paralysed. A government that came to power criticising floods is now skirting the issue. Waterlogging has become commonplace now. Are we this backward a nation that we can’t fix our drainage systems?”

Meanwhile, heavy rain lashed Mumbai, too, overnight. The Met Department issued a warning for further rain, issuing a yellow alert till August 18.
