Chetan Bhagat, the Indian author, was a full-time investment banker before he developed his interest in writing, and further became a published author and lived the Bollywood dream with his books being adapted as Hindi movies such as 3-Idiots, Half Girlfriend, and Two States. In a podcast with Colonel Shivender Kanwar and Vihan Singh, Bhagat recently opened up about losing passion for his banking career and how he resigned a day after getting a hefty bonus in 2008.

Reflecting on the mindset to leave a million-dollar job for passion, the 51-year-old revealed that the last bonus he received was a million dollars in 2008, in cash, excluding the salary. “I resigned from this job to sell books. That’s not easy,” he said.

“My mindset was this,” he continued, “There are two ways to look at it: You have a million dollars in your bank account. Keep sitting and earning. Life is set now, I won’t die of hunger. Take it home. You have a million dollars. You are free financially, or you can say I am covered, God sent me this gift, and I can be a writer now. And that second mentality is what I talk.”
