Rattan Dhillon from Chandigarh hit a jackpot while cleaning his home. A car enthusiast with little knowledge of the stock market, Dhillon stumbled upon old physical shares of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), originally bought in 1988 at just Rs 10 per share. The shares belonged to someone who has since passed away, and Dhillon had no idea what to do with them.

Curious, he posted a photo of the share documents on X, asking for guidance. “We found these at home, but I have no idea about the stock market. Can someone with expertise guide us on whether we still own these shares?” he wrote. The post, made on March 11 at 9 AM, went viral, racking up over two million views.

The comments section turned into a hub of financial analysis and jokes. One user wrote, “Rough approximate calculations: Total initial shares = 30. After 3 splits and 2 bonuses, it should be 960 shares today. Today’s value approximate Rs 11.88 lakhs.”

Another user said, “Sending a Lamborghini to pick you and a suite at Vantara.” Meanwhile, another user said, “You have to email them, with the attached proof, and they have their process to credit these to your Demat. You’ll need to bring these to their office for verification, and then they will credit these shares digitally to your Demat, the total ones after splits etc.”

Adding to the fun, one user suggested: “Rattan bhai aur acche se ghar chaan maro, kya pata MRF ke bhi nikal aayein kuch shares.” (Rattan bhai, search the house properly, who knows, we might even find some MRF shares).

While the stock market might be facing turbulence, Dhillon is probably having the time of his life after stumbling upon this unexpected fortune.
