Several train accidents have been reported in parts of India over the last months. Amid eyebrows being raised at the Ministry of Railways, a video of a man deboarding a train, halting it a few metres after a railway crossing, to open the railway gate in Bihar’s Siwan, has emerged on social media.

The viral video begins with a local reporter showing the closed railway crossing gate to his viewers while a train passes by. The train stops, and the man gets down, walks back to the crossing gate and opens it. The guard then walks back to the train and boards it.

Sharing the video, an X user Suraj G Naik wrote, “Wonder of the world The train guard or driver gets down and opens the railway gate. Is this the development of Bihar? Or is it the result of the hard work of the Railway Minister (Reel Mantri)?”

An Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) officer on X, J Sanjay Kumar, wrote, “Unmanned gates are completely abolished for public safety. Sections with few trains there is a concept of mobile gate man in order to not waste staff in 3 shifts at gates, 2 gatemen come with train. The front closes the gate & at back opens. He is not a Guard. They are in white uniform.”

The man in the video, however, was not in white uniform, and identified himself as a “guard” when the reporter asked if he was one.

Last month, two people were killed and several were left injured after as many as 22 coaches of the Mumbai-Howrah Mail derailed in Jharkhand.
