Saina Nehwal is being called ‘unpatriotic’ on Facebook
It’s unfathomable how some people jump up – without a thought – to judge whether someone is patriotic or not. Recently, badminton champion Saina Nehwal posted a picture of herself with her phone. “My new Honor 8 phone …… love the phone and the colour,” she wrote in a Facebook post, with a picture of herself looking very pleased with the phone. As it happened, it took no time for people to call her ‘anti-national’ for apparently promoting a Chinese phone brand!
“Saina please dnt use r promote bloody Chinese goods…. We have lo of respect for u. Please kickoff those bloody Chinese goods,” commented one person. “I am your fan, but if you say buy China product am not. I will say stop this nonsense,” wrote another.
All this hate mongering for a person who has represented the country internationally, and won several medals and trophies for the nation to boot. She’s even been awarded the Padma Bhushan, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, among many other prestigious titles.
To put things in context, in March this year, Nehwal was announced as Huawei’s sub-brand Honor’s India brand ambassador which is probably why she put up the picture, but the comments that followed were definitely unwarranted.

Interestingly, the Chinese multinational has already announced its ‘Make in India’ vision, and has announced a manufacturing unit in Chennai in partnership with Flex.
