Municipal workers in Assam’s Tinsukia town decided to teach a chronic violator a lesson—by literally returning his garbage to his own doorstep.

According to a Times of India report, the incident unfolded late Monday night around 9.30 pm in the busy Daily Bazar area. A staffer from a grocery-and-gift store was caught on camera unloading piles of cardboard boxes and shop waste directly onto the street. A patrolling team from the Tinsukia Municipal Board (TMB) stopped him on the spot.

When questioned, the employee admitted the trash came from his nearby shop. Instead of issuing a routine fine, the civic team devised a sharper punishment.

By 8 am the next morning, municipal workers returned with an excavator. They scooped up the same waste and dumped it right in front of the shop’s shutter—ensuring the owner would be greeted by his own refuse when he arrived.

Pulak Chetia, chairman of the Tinsukia Municipal Board, confirmed that the store had been caught multiple times before. “The shop was a repeated offender. We appeal to everyone to keep Tinsukia town clean. It is the responsibility of everyone to maintain the town’s cleanliness,” he said.

Clips of the incident are now viral on social media, sparking laughter and applause. Many praised the “creative punishment.” One Instagram user wrote, “Finally I saw something to smile about when I opened Insta.” Another said it was an “UNO reverse.” A third said, “Should happen with everyone littering on public property.”

One user wrote, “Tit for tat—civic sense sikhana nahi, dimaag mein ghusedna padega” (To teach civic sense, you can’t just say it, you have to drill it into people’s heads).
