The Uttar Pradesh Government on Wednesday evening appointed former state director general of police (DGP) Prashant Kumar as the chairperson of Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission (UPESSC).

Kumar, a 1990-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, known for his proximity to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, had retired from the post of acting UP DGP on May 31 this year.

Speaking to the media after his appointment as UPESSC chairperson, Kumar said his priority will be to ensure “transparency in the selection process and cement the trust among the aspirants”.

The Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission conducts the recruitment of teachers in the Higher Education Department, the Departments of Basic Education, Secondary Education, Minority Welfare & Waqf, Vocational Education & Skill Development.

The teachers for aided non-government colleges and aided minority colleges, aided non-government intermediate colleges, higher secondary schools, high schools, their affiliated primary schools, and similar aided minority institutions are also selected by the Commission.

The commission also recruits teachers for institutions run by the newly established Atal Residential School Committee. It also selects instructors in government-run Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) under the Department of Vocational Education and Skill Development.

The commission also oversees the UP Teacher Eligibility Test (UPTET).

Known for eliminating hardcore gangsters in police encounters while serving as additional director general of police (ADGP) Meerut Range and then during his long stint as ADG Law & Order, Kumar had succeeded over a dozen senior officers to become the acting DGP in February 2024.

His latest appointment did not come as a surprise to several people in the corridors of power.

His key achievements as ADG/Special DGP Law & Order (May 2020 – January 2024) included the constitution of the Anti Mafia task force and the confiscation of their illegal assets, formation of the Uttar Pradesh Special Security force (UPSSF) to provide security for specific individuals and establishments within Uttar Pradesh like government buildings, courts, industrial units, and other important locations.

He was in charge of the foundation and inauguration ceremony of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya and drafted its security scheme.

As DGP, he was instrumental in planning, strategizing security at Maha Kumbh.

Studies. Awarded with various medals, including the President’s Gallantry medal, Kumar has served central deputation in Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and Indo Tibetan Border Police Force (ITBP) for eight years.
