Cai Yuxin, a car show model from Taiwan, tragically passed away after receiving treatment from a doctor popularly known as “Godfather of Liposuction.” Yuxin was suffering from chronic insomnia.
According to a report in the South China Morning Post, Yuxin was undergoing a sleep therapy treatment involving an intravenous anaesthetic known as the “milk injection”. The procedure uses propofol, a short-acting sedative commonly administered in medical and surgical settings, which was recommended to her by a friend who sought treatment last month.
The report further stated that the injection was induced by Wu Shaohu, a popular cosmetic surgeon and director of the clinic who is also known as Taiwan’s “Godfather of Liposuction.” However, shortly after giving the sedative, Wu left the clinic, leaving only a male assistant to monitor Yuxin.
Panicked, the assistant contacted Dr Wu, who began instructing him on a video call on how to perform CPR. Dr Wu rushed back to the clinic, but by the time he arrived, Yuxin had already lost her life as her heart stopped functioning. She was immediately transported to a hospital for emergency care. The report suggests that an error in the medical setup may have caused an excessive amount of propofol to be delivered into Yuxin’s body in a short period, leading to severe complications.
Yuxin soon went into cardiac and respiratory arrest. Despite several medical efforts, she remained in a coma for 18 days. With no signs of recovery, her family decided to remove her from life support on June 12.
Notably, pop star Michael Jackson’s death in 2009 was also associated with the use of propofol. According to reports, Dr Conrad Murray had administered propofol to Jackson for insomnia at his residence. Later, Murray was convicted of involuntary manslaughter, and the case highlighted several safety failings, including the absence of essential monitoring equipment and a lack of emergency preparedness.
