A Chinese man was abandoned in a well for three days after villagers mistook his cries for ghostly sounds. The incident occurred near the Thailand-Myanmar border. Liu Chuanyi, 22, was exploring the area when he fell into the well hidden by overgrown vegetation.

According to the Deccan Chronicle, the villagers heard cries from the direction of the well and dismissed it as ghostly noises. By the time Chuanyi was rescued, he was weak, and had sustained serious injuries including bruises, cerebral concussion, and a fractured wrist. Reports also stated that Chuanyi shouted for help once every hour to conserve his energy.

Thailand’s The Universal Daily News reported that local police in Mae Sot, Tak province, near the Thai-Myanmar border, received complaints of strange cries from the forest on November 24. As the police and rescue team launched the search into the forest to investigate, they called out and heard voices responding in return. The rescue operation lasted 30 minutes.

Authorities have contacted immigration officials to find out why Chuanyi was near the Thai-Myanmar border. Meanwhile, he is out of danger and measures are being taken to seal the well.
