After being lost at sea for 95 days, Peruvian fisherman Máximo Napa, 61, has finally returned to his family. Napa had initially prepared enough food for just two weeks but was left stranded in the Pacific Ocean due to stormy weather, Reuters reported.
To survive, he fed on birds, sea turtles, and roaches, but for the last 15 days, he had no food at all, leading to starvation. Recalling his horror, Napa shared that thoughts of his family, especially his two-month-old granddaughter, kept him strong.
“I did not want to die,” Napa said after reuniting with his brother, in Paita, near the border with Ecuador. “I ate roaches, birds, the last thing I ate was turtles,” he told Reuters, adding, “I thought about my mother every day. I’m thankful to God for giving me a second chance.”
The Peruvian Navy released photos of his rescue, including one showing his reunion with his brother and another of him receiving medical care. “After 90 days of searching, the fisherman who had lost his way in the high seas was found. He was rescued by the Ecuadorian boat ‘Don F’ and the Maritime Patrol BAP ‘Rio Piura’; the latter provided immediate medical attention,” the post by the Peruvian Navy read.

Speaking to local media, Napa’s mother expressed gratitude for the support of her relatives, who helped her remain hopeful, according to Reuters. “I told the Lord, whether he’s alive or dead, just bring him back to me, even if it’s just to see him. But my daughters never lost faith. They kept telling me: Mom, he’ll come back, he’ll come back,” she told TV Peru.
