A 12-year-old boy from Doncaster, South Yorkshire, United Kingdom, suffered a cardiac arrest after attempting the dangerous ‘chroming’ challenge on TikTok. According to a Metro report, the boy, identified as Cesar Watson-King, inhaled a can of deodorant at his home on August 21.
His mother, Nichola King, was breastfeeding her youngest child when she heard a loud thud. Rushing downstairs, she found her son collapsed on the kitchen floor in a distorted state, having a seizure. Cesar was taken to the hospital, where doctors induced a coma for two days due to seizures and multiple cardiac arrests. He recovered in eight days, and was discharged.
“I hadn’t heard of chroming before this. An older boy had shown him how to do it. When the police told me what he’d inhaled, I thought he was going to die. I knew the warnings on the back of the cans that say ‘solvent abuse kills instantly,'” Nichola told Metro.
The chroming challenge involves inhaling deadly substances and chemicals like hairspray, gasoline, nail paint thinners, spray paint, and more. These items are used for a brief euphoric effect. However, according to the American Addiction Centers, it could be deadly, leading to dizziness, vomiting, cardiac failure, brain damage, and sometimes, death.
According to a 2017 report by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, as mentioned by Forbes, at least 6,84,000 adolescents between the ages of 17 and 17 inhaled toxic chemicals in 2015.
In March, an 11-year-old boy in the UK died while attempting the ‘chroming’ challenge at a friend’s house. The boy suffered a cardiac arrest and died on the spot.
