Miss Universe executive Nawat Itsaragrisil apologises, faces ban after clash with Miss Mexico: ‘Every woman deserves respect’

The drama unfolded on November 4 during a live-streamed Miss Universe sashing ceremony, where tensions reportedly reached a boiling point.

Beauty pageants may project an image of grace and poise, but behind the glittering stage, tempers can flare. That’s exactly what happened ahead of the Miss Universe 2025 competition in Bangkok, when an unexpected clash between Miss Grand International (MGI) president Nawat Itsaragrisil and Miss Mexico, Fátima Bosch, turned into a global controversy.

The drama unfolded on November 4 during a live-streamed sashing ceremony, where Nawat was seen confronting Bosch for skipping a sponsorship shoot to film with Telemundo.

In the video, he can be heard shouting after several contestants stood up in protest, “Stop. Stop! Sit down. If anyone wants to continue the contest, sit down.”

Moments later, Bosch walked out, followed by a handful of delegates who left in solidarity.

The situation worsened when, in a separate clip, Nawat appeared to single Bosch out, saying everyone was welcome back “except Mexico,” and claiming she was “talking too much.”

Bosch later took to TikTok to share her side, accusing the pageant president of disrespect. “What your director just did is not respectful. He called me dumb because he has problems with the organisation. That’s not fair because I do everything OK… The world needs to see this because we are empowered women, and this is a platform for our voice. No one can shut our voice,” she is heard saying.

Support quickly poured in.

Miss Universe 2024, Victoria Kjær Theilvig of Denmark, wrote, “Standing up for yourself is not always easy, but it’s one of the most important acts of self-respect and strength. Enough is enough, our voices will be heard loud and clear.”

Meanwhile, Miss Universe Bonaire 2025, Nicole Peiliker-Visser, tried to cool tensions, urging reconciliation. “We can fix this. We can bring them back. We’re having such a great time in Thailand.”

The fallout prompted the Miss Universe Organisation (MUO) to launch an internal review. In a formal statement, MUO confirmed that a special team led by CEO Mario Búcaro would travel to Thailand “to ensure a secure and professional environment for all delegates and reaffirm MUO’s commitment to transparency and unity.”

Despite the turmoil, the main pageant schedule remained on track.

Within days, MUO took further action, restricting Nawat’s involvement and nearly barring him from all Miss Universe 74th edition events. The decision was announced by pageant president Raúl Rocha in a video message, underscoring that “respect and professionalism are non-negotiable.”

But soon after, the tone shifted. During the pageant’s welcome ceremony, Nawat returned, not as an authority figure, but as a man offering an emotional apology. Fighting back tears, he said, “I want to apologise to everyone. I had no idea how big this issue would become,” as an aide handed him a tissue.

In a separate livestream, Nawat issued a more formal statement in Thai: “If anyone feels bad, uncomfortable, or affected, I apologise to everyone. I especially apologise to the girls who were present, around 75 of them.”

He added that no Miss Universe representatives were currently in Thailand, but confirmed that CEO Mario Búcaro would arrive soon. “He is very kind and will fly in tomorrow… That will make things easier and keep us aligned.”
