Bruhat Soma, 12, was declared the winner of the 2024 Scripps National Spelling Bee. The Indian-American student spelled 29 words in the tiebreaker round. A video of Soma reciting a shloka from the Bhagavad Gita is winning hearts on the Internet.
In the video shared by ANI, Soma can be seen standing with his hands folded and reciting the shloka. “I slowly started memorising Bhagavad Gita, then I started doing spelling a bit more but now I am going to continue finishing the Bhagavad Gita… I do believe (in supreme power) because God makes several things happen,” the ANI post quoted Soma as saying.
Soma also said he has memorised 80 per cent of the Hindu scripture.

The video amassed over 1,08,000 views and several social media users applauded Soma for being rooted in Indian culture. “You got great parents, kid. Maybe they can give some of my American Indian friends lessons in how to instil good Indian tradition in their kids,” a user wrote. “Magic starts when he starts the shloka recitation. You are transported back to a temple of your childhood,” another user commented.
“And… the accent vanishes as soon as he starts chanting. Reminds me of Sudhanshu Trivedi ji’s explanation of how Sanskrit is accent neutral,” a third user wrote.
Bruhat Soma became the 28th Indian-American to win the prestigious title. This year’s win was his third attempt at the national level. He spelled 29 words correctly out of 30 in 90 seconds, surpassing his closest competitor, Faizan Zaki from Texas, who managed nine words.
