‘Never have I ever…’: Bear spotted swimming on Florida beach
Black bears are widely found in Florida.

Imagine people chilling at a beach in Florida when suddenly a black bear appears from the ocean, goes past the sunbathing vacationers, and slips into the wilderness. A day ago, many vacationers in Destin, a city in Florida, encountered this exact scene.
Jennifer Majors Smith, a resident of Pensacola, captured the bear’s sudden appearance from the ocean on the busy beach. In the videos, the people appear shocked by the bear’s presence as it moves past them swiftly.
Smith shared these videos on her Instagram and wrote, “Never have I ever….seen a black bear swim up out of the Gulf Coast and onto the beach. #vacation #vacationdestination2023 #blackbear #destin #bear”.

Commenting on it, a Twitter user wrote, “I wonder if that’s the same one who broke into my parents’ car and drank three diet Pepsis a couple weeks ago in Gatlinburg! He needed a vacation from breaking into all those tourist’s/vacationers’ vehicles and he wanted to go someplace with a beach! ”.
Florida has a thriving population of black bears. As per the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, there are approximately 4,050 black bears in the state. In a conversation with AL.com, Captain Chris Kirby, a charter boat captain based out of Destin, said that it is not uncommon to see black bears swimming in the ocean. “There are a lot of bears at Eglin Air Force Base. They swim across the bay. Sometimes they go for a joy swim,” he said.
