Bengaluru gets over 7000 video cameras with connected and AI technology. Honeywell, in collaboration with the Bengaluru City Police, has successfully completed phase 1 of the Safe City project. Over 4,100 video cameras have been installed across the city in 3,000 strategic locations, powered by Honeywell’s smart and connected safety and security technology. These cameras are designed to detect critical incidents and help reduce police response times.
The cameras are connected to a command center that uses artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). In one demonstration, Honeywell showcased how its connected video camera technology can be used to detect smartphone thieves using markers such as the colour of their clothing and vehicle type. The system can even analyze the vehicle number from a distance.
The video feed can also be linked to a database of criminals, allowing them to be tracked without compromising the privacy of residents. The body cameras worn by police officers are also connected to the system, and by pressing the SOS button, the video feed can be sent to the command center for further action.
As part of the Safe City project, the Bengaluru police will use the same technology to protect citizens from unidentified objects. They have also established “Safety Islands” in easily accessible public places, where citizens can contact the department through emergency call boxes by dialling 1122. In phase 2, Bengaluru city will receive an additional 3,400 video cameras, 115 body-worn cameras, 20 safety islands, two additional drones, as well as a permanent command center and data center. The project was awarded to the private bidder Honeywell last year for Rs Rs 496.67 cores and has been implemented under the ‘Nirbhaya Scheme’.
