Popular video-sharing platform YouTube is getting a new feature that lets Android and Google TV users stream select videos in ‘1080p Premium’ quality. The company says it is basically ‘an enhanced bitrate version of 1080p’, which offers more details and crisper video quality.
Until now, the setting was available to YouTube Premium subscribers on iOS but according to a recent report by 9to5Google, it looks like select free users are now getting the option on Android and Google TV. Earlier this year when YouTube started rolling out the feature for Apple devices, many thought that the platform was planning to make 1080p streaming exclusive to premium subscribers, but Google was quick to clarify that it was not the case.
For the uninitiated, higher bitrate videos offer better visual quality and are really useful if you are someone who watches sports or gaming videos that have lots of details and motion. While free users have to manually switch the video quality to 1080p Premium, the option will be enabled by default for YouTube Premium subscribers
One thing to note here is that the feature is currently limited to videos that were uploaded in 1080p quality and the option won’t appear on Shorts, Live Streams and videos with higher or lower resolution.
1080p Premium seems to be available only for some users, so it is still unclear if Google will roll out the feature gradually or if this is some kind of internal testing.
