Instagram introduces personalised ‘Your Algorithm’ for Reels recommendations

Your Algorithm is now available to users in the United States and will expand to English-speaking users worldwide soon. Instagram users can now view, edit, and add interests to fine-tune their Reels experience.

While watching Reels, users will now notice a small icon at the top right corner, two lines topped with hearts. Tapping this icon opens the “Your Algorithm” dashboard, where Instagram displays the themes it believes matter most to you. Instagram has rolled out a new feature to give users far more influence over what appears in their feeds, beginning with Reels.

Announced on December 10, the tool called ‘Your Algorithm’ offers a clearer look at how Instagram decides what you see and puts that decision-making power directly in your hands. The launch marks one of the platform’s most transparent steps yet toward helping people understand and personalise the recommendations they receive.

While watching Reels, users will now notice a small icon at the top right corner, two lines topped with hearts. Tapping this icon opens the “Your Algorithm” dashboard, where Instagram displays the themes it believes matter most to you. These topics are automatically generated based on your in-app behaviour and organised through AI, resulting in a personalised snapshot of your current interests.

Users can even share this summary as a Story, turning it into a social moment similar to the way people post their Spotify Wrapped results each year. Beneath the summary, a more detailed list of topics appears, reflecting everything Instagram thinks you’ve been engaging with recently.

From here, the experience becomes interactive. You can tap specific topics to indicate whether you want to see more or less of them. Over time, the recommendations in your Reels feed adjust based on these choices. And if something you genuinely care about isn’t on the list, you can type it in manually to add it, ensuring your interest profile accurately reflects you, not an algorithm’s best guess.

The update arrives as platforms increasingly acknowledge the need to give users more control over personalised content. TikTok introduced a similar ‘Manage Topics’ feature last year, letting people tailor what appears on their For You page. But where TikTok groups interests into a small set of broad categories, Instagram takes a more individualised approach, letting users view and expand their own tailored list.

Your Algorithm is now available to users in the United States and will expand to English-speaking users worldwide soon. Instagram says this is only the beginning: eventually, the tool will extend beyond Reels, offering personalisation options for the Explore tab and other areas of the app.

The company notes that its long-term goal is to weave this level of control seamlessly across the entire Instagram experience.
