Google Gemini, the company’s AI-powered digital assistant that is poised to replace Google Assistant may be getting a new feature from the latter that allows users to make phone calls and send texts without having to unlock the device.

During Android Authority’s recent APK teardown of the latest beta version of the Google app, the publication noted that the latest beta adds new functionality that allows Gemini to handle phone calls and messages even if your phone is locked.

The company has already ported a ton of features from Google Assistant to Gemini, but many say the AI-powered digital assistant is still not as useful as the former when it comes to modifying system settings and completing actions on the user’s behalf.

Similar to Google Assistant, users may have to manually turn on the toggle before they can use Gemini to make calls and send text from the lock screen. This is really useful as Gemini is currently limited to a handful of functionalities, and often switches back to Google Assistant to perform actions like triggering routines and more.

For those wondering, the new feature appears as ‘Make calls and send messages without unlocking’ toggle under ‘Gemini on lock screen’ in the app settings. But even if you enable the feature, Google says that “Gemini will still ask you to unlock when a response contains personal content, such as your Gmail messages, from apps you use.”

Apart from the upcoming functionality, Google also seems to be testing some UI changes like a much more clean floating Gemini overlay that also expands vertically, making all text easily visible. The tech giant also seems to be separating Gemini extensions into various categories like Communication, Device Control, Travel, Media and Productivity. Recently, Google was spotted testing a new image resizing option for Gemini, which, as the name suggests, lets you generate images in the aspect ratio of your choice.
