Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha Friday said India has indigenously built a light tank named after legendary Dogra warrior General Zorawar Singh, and that it underwent successful trials this year in Ladakh’s Nyoma at 4,200 metres and in the deserts of Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.

Paying tribute to General Zorawar Singh on his martyrdom day, Sinha said the light tank, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation’s Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment, was designed for high-altitude mountain warfare and can also be deployed in deserts. He said it was completed in a record two years.

Sinha pointed out that the tank weighs nearly 25 tonnes, ensuring swift mobility in border areas, and that it can be airlifted to these places due to its lightweight. He said it is equipped with modern technology, artificial intelligence and an advanced defence mechanism to engage targets with greater precision. He hoped it would prove a force multiplier for the armed forces.

Sinha noted that while Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had released a postal ticket in the name of General Zorawar Singh to raise public awareness of his contributions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi “in order to keep his legacy alive among the coming generations has named an indigenously built light tank as General Zorawar Singh Tank.”

Pointing out that the mountain warfare strategy adopted by Gen Zorawar Singh has inspired military leadership generation after generation, the LG said Army Infantry “also follows his footsteps while making preparations for war.”

He spoke on General Zorawar Singh’s military campaigns in Ladakh, Baltistan, Gilgit, and Skardu, highlighting his pivotal role in the expansion of the Dogra Empire. Reiterating that the general’s mountain strategy continues to guide military thinking, the LG said the Army Infantry “also follows his footsteps while making preparations for war.”

He called upon youth and all sections of society to follow General Zorawar Singh’s message of moral clarity and unwavering conviction to shape a better future and empower the marginalised.

“Let us dedicate ourselves to changing lives, guiding and supporting youth and build a more just and peaceful society,” he said.
