Google Drive gets smarter at organising files: Gains 12 new pre-defined categories
Google Drive is making it easier to find what you need with the rollout of a new category system. This feature lets you tag files with 12 pre-defined categories like "banking" or "medical" for quicker searching and organisation.

Finding a specific file on Google Drive just became a lot easier with the introduction of 12 new categories. Google Drive is currently rolling out the ability to mark a file using 12 pre-defined categories for select users, which makes organising and finding files on the platform simpler. This feature is currently available for select Android smartphone users, and the same is expected to be made available for iOS and web users in the coming days.

I spotted this feature in January but was not sure if it's a new feature or already exists for workspace users!!

A report by TheSpAndroid suggests that the new Google Drive feature will be available for Android, iOS, and desktop users. Google has been allowing users to organise and categorise files using folders; with the latest update, users can tag a file to one of the 12 pre-defined categories, which makes accessing a file on the platform a lot easier, where, one can search for a specific file by searching via the category.
Using the new category feature, users can pin the same file for multiple categories, and it also offers control over which categories should appear on the home screen of Google Drive. This additional customization feature allows users to select only the most used categories for a clutter-free user experience.
This feature was first spotted in early January, and the same is now rolling out to more users. It is expected to be available for Google Workspace users and regular users, helping them to easily manage files on Google Drive in the coming days.
As of now, there is no option to add new categories. However, the 12 pre-defined categories do include some of the most popular file management options like auto, banking, medical, school, and more. These categories are denoted by a custom icon, which also makes it easy to identify them.
