Got an old iPhone or iPad? Apple may soon wipe your iCloud backup

Apple is one of the few companies that continues to offer software for most of its products years after they are launched. But even after the tech giant discontinues its products, they remain usable for a few years. However, starting next month, backing up your data over iCloud may be restricted to users running iOS 9 or later.

According to a recent report by MacRumors, Apple has reportedly emailed some customers that new backups for iPhones and iPads running on iOS 8 or earlier will no longer be supported and that all their existing iCloud backups will be deleted as well.

To give you a quick recap, the company started using CloudKit for iCloud backups with iOS 9, and it looks like the changes are being made as the tech giant may be scrapping the older backup system.

The company also went on to say that “apps and data stored on your devices will not be affected” and that users have the option to manually back up their devices to a Mac or Windows PC. Apple says that it is discontinuing iCloud backup for older devices to “more closely align” with its “published minimum software requirements.”

The email also states that these changes will go live on December 18, 2024, meaning users have a month before all their old iCloud backups are gone forever. To manually back up data on iOS 8 or an earlier device, connect your iPhone, iPad or iPod with a USB cable, and use the Finder app on your Mac.

On Mac, click on General in the Finder window, select the ‘Back up all of the data on your iPhone to this Mac’ option and proceed to tap on the ‘Back Up Now’ button. If you are on Windows, connect your device via USB, launch iTunes and once the device is connected, tap on ‘Summary’ and click on the ‘Back Up Now’ button that appears below Backups.
