Week before China visit, PM Narendra Modi logs onto Sina Weibo

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is preparing for his China visit by opening an account on Sina Weibo, the largest Chinese micro-blogging site with over 140 million monthly active users.

He might be the third most followed person on Twitter and one of the largest names on Facebook, but Narendra Modi is now out to conquer a new frontier… one beyond the Great Wall.

The Indian Prime Minister is preparing for his China visit by opening an account on Sina Weibo, the largest Chinese micro-blogging site with over 140 million monthly active users.

According to chinainternetwatch.com, China’s most popular social media channel had 66.6 million daily active users and 143.8 million monthly active users at the end of March 2015.

In fact, at the time of filing this report, Modi has close to 5,000 followers. It might not be much in comparison to the 12 million and 28 million followers on this Twitter and facebook handles, but it surely shows that he is prepared to reach out to people wherever he is. Significantly, both Twitter and Facebook have limited reach in China and might not appeal to the audience Modi wants to address.

The Prime Minister has also tweeted about his Chinese social media debut and we are sure there is going to be a lot of Mandarin posts from this handle as well as his other handles in the coming days.

Modi will be in China from May 14 to 16.
