Meta’s text-based conversation app Threads continues to grow steadily, with monthly active users now topping 130 million according to CEO Mark Zuckerberg. This is actually higher than the peak levels Threads saw immediately following its launch in July 2023.

Speaking during Meta’s recent earnings call, Zuckerberg expressed optimism that Threads can maintain its momentum with ongoing improvements and user growth. He noted that more people are actively using the app today compared to the initial surge when it launched.

Back in July, Zuckerberg had big ambitions for Threads – predicting it could become Meta’s next billion-user platform, alongside Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger. While still early days, Threads seems to be finding its footing.

By comparison, X (formerly known as Twitter) has around 550 million monthly active users based on figures owner Elon Musk shared in September. Threads has a ways to go, but Meta is investing heavily to get the app to scale.

In the months following launch, Threads’ usage declined due to missing core features like keyword search and multiple account support. However, Meta moved swiftly to address these gaps and built out the app’s capabilities. This renewed focus seems to be paying off.

The addition of editing capabilities, voice posts, improved discovery and more resulted in Threads’ daily downloads nearly tripling to 28 million in December. Expanding to the EU and increasing cross-pollination with Instagram profiles also drove growth.

Looking ahead, Meta’s CFO stated the company remains focused on further scaling Threads’ community through additional features and enhancements in 2024.
