Instagram is getting a new feature that lets users start a livestream visible only to those on their 'Close Friends' list.

Instagram, the Meta-owned social media platform recently announced a new feature called ‘Close Friends on Live’, which, as the name suggests, lets users go live with up to three other people.

The company says the new functionality can be useful if you want to share things on your mind, catch up with friends, share memes, plan trips or casually hang out with your closest friends. Back in 2016, Instagram launched ‘Live Broadcasts’, but the catch with it was that the live stream is public and anyone who follows you can join and watch what you are up to.

Since its introduction, the feature has been widely used by celebrities, influencers and content creators to connect with their fans and followers. However, it did not appeal to normal users who were uncomfortable with the idea of every one of their followers being able to see what they were doing.

Meta says the new functionality can come in handy if a user wants to share influencer-like content, have discussions without being judged by random followers or host a study session with a limited number of people.

In the last few months, Meta has been trying to make Instagram a more private place. In November last year, the company introduced an option that lets users make posts on their grid visible only to close friends. A few weeks ago, Instagram got an option that lets you limit interactions with your close friends.
