Reliance Jio today unveiled a new internet-enabled handset called ‘Jio Bharat’. Aimed at people who are unable to afford a smartphone, the company says it plans to make the internet accessible to more than 250 million people across the country who still use feature phones.

The move comes at a time when telecom operators are increasing the price of voice services and struggling to keep afloat. Jio says it will start the beta trial for 10 lakh Jio Bharat phones across 6,5000 tehsils from July 7. The telecom operator also announced a new Jio Bharat plan that costs Rs 123 and offers unlimited voice calls and 500MB mobile data for 28 days. The same plan is priced at Rs 1,234 annually.

Apart from this, Jio Bharat phones will also support UPI payments with JioPay and support JioCinema and JioSaavn. The phone also comes with a camera and a flashlight, but Jio is yet to share details about the same. The phone features a 1.77-inch QVGA TFT screen and is powered by a 1,000mAh battery. It also comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack and supports storage expansion up to 128GB via microSD card.
