YouTube is testing new generative AI features that can summarize and categorise comments based on topics and a new conversational tool that can answer questions about the video you are watching.

AI-powered conversational tool

Designed for those who want to know more about the content they are consuming, YouTube has introduced a new conversational AI tool that lets you ask questions about the content and get answers about the video. It can also offer recommendations for related content without interrupting video playback. As for academic videos, the new generative AI-powered tool can generate quizzes.

The generative AI-backed conversational tool can be accessed by tapping the ‘✨Ask’ button that appears on select videos and allows users to ask questions about the video similar to how you would ask ChatGPT. Currently available to what YouTube calls “a small subset” of people, the new feature is limited to the US for now, with the company saying it will be rolled out on more YouTube Premium members on Android devices in the coming weeks.

AI summarised comments

The comment summarise feature works by categorising comments of long-form videos in topics, making it easy for creators to quickly jump into conversations and get inspiration for making new content.

YouTube says the topics will be based on comments that are published and won’t include data from comments that are held for review or contain blocked worlds. Creators can also delete any individual comments categorised under a topic. However, the experiment is currently available only to a handful of users and is not available on every video.

Available to YouTube Premium members, the new features will be available on YouTube’s experimental hub and require users to opt-in.

Apart from these generative AI-backed features, YouTube also seems to be testing a new ‘play something’ button on the mobile app, which, as the name suggests, plays a random video when you are unsure what to watch.
