Google has unveiled a new experimental AI agent that is designed to provide users an AI-generated summary of their inbox every morning by combing through their emails, calendar details, and other documents.

The new feature, called CC, will send a daily briefing titled ‘Your Day Ahead’ to users’ inbox each morning, the tech giant said in a blog post on December 16. The AI-generated, personalised summary will comprise the user’s schedule for that day as well as reminders to complete key tasks such as paying bills or scheduled appointments.

CC can also be used to generate email drafts and autonomously add events to users’ Google Calendar in order to help them get a head start of their day. “Plus, you can steer CC by replying or emailing directly with custom requests, teaching it things about yourself or asking it to remember ideas and todos,” Google said.

The email productivity assistant is one of many AI agents developed by Google for coding, shopping, and web browsing in Chrome. In September this year, OpenAI launched a similar personalised briefing tool called ChatGPT Pulse. Alongside tailored briefings based on user context, ChatGPT Pulse’s reports also include compilations of news stories on specific topics, such as the latest developments about a particular sports team.

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, had then described Pulse as his “favorite feature we’ve launched in a long time.”

Meanwhile, Google’s CC agent is powered by its Gemini family of AI models and is capable of learning more about users by syncing with their Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Drive, as well as pulling information from the internet. You can also further personalise the tool by teaching it more about yourself, and give it things to remember by replying to its briefs or emailing it directly, as per Google.

Available in Google Labs, a hub for the tech giant’s latest experiments with AI, CC is initially launching in early access to paid subscribers over 18 in the United States and Canada. Users can also apply to join a waitlist to use CC.

Beyond CC, Google is also looking to upgrade Chrome with agentic capabilities, currently in preview, following the recent integration of its Gemini AI chatbot in the popular web browser (currently accessible only in the US). Amid the rise of AI agents, security researchers have also warned that these tools open the door to a new class of vulnerabilities and cyber attacks.

Last month, Google announced that it is upgrading the Chrome browser with a new security layer comprising a separate large language model (LLM) called ‘User Alignment Critic’ that is isolated from untrusted web content and will vet the actions of the AI browser agent.
