In a major blow to the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the NCP (SP) in Pune ahead of the upcoming civic polls, several former corporators belonging to both parties were inducted into the BJP on Saturday. Despite being allies at the state and national level, the BJP and the NCP have decided to contest the Pune civic elections separately.

The prominent NCP(SP) leaders who joined the BJP include Surendra Pathare, the son of sitting NCP(SP) legislator Bapu Pathare, and former corporator Sachin Dodke, known to be close to NCP(SP) executive president Supriya Sule.

From the Ajit Pawar-led NCP, former corporators Sayali Wanjale, daughter of former legislator Ramesh Wanjale, Vikas Dangat, Bala Dhankawade, and Rohini Chimate joined the BJP.

NCP leader Narayan Galande; Gana Chavan, son of former NCP MP Vasantrao Chavan; Khandu Satish Londhe, son of the late former Congress corporator Satish Londhe; former Khadakwasla sarpanch Santosh Mate; and Anil Tupe from NCP (SP) joined the BJP.

State BJP chief Ravindra Chavan welcomed the leaders to the BJP and said it reflected their confidence in the development work done by the party.

Union minister and former Pune mayor Murlidhar Mohol led the massive induction of senior leaders to the BJP. “We have only inducted those who have a positive public image and work for the public. They will strengthen the BJP with their work,” he said.

Incidentally, the NCP and NCP(SP) are mulling a pre-poll alliance for the Pune civic body election. However, the local NCP(SP) unit is divided over joining hands with the Ajit Pawar-led NCP, saying it would be unfair to loyal party workers who stood with Sharad Pawar.
