YouTube unveiled a suite of new AI-powered tools in Shorts, its short-form vertical video offering, at its annual Made on YouTube live event in New York, United States on Tuesday, September 16.

The latest updates include quick AI-assisted editing, a new Speech-to-Song feature, and Veo 3 Fast integration. ‘Edit with AI’ allows users to transform raw camera roll footage into Shorts with transitions, voiceovers, background music, etc., Google said. The AI-generated voiceovers will be available in both English and Hindi.

AI-edited Shorts will carry Google’s proprietary SynthID watermarks and content labels to indicate that the videos were generated with AI. The ‘Edit with AI’ feature is in the experimental stage and will be rolled out in India and other select markets in the coming weeks, as per the company.

These AI-driven updates arrive as YouTube marks its 20th anniversary year and doubles down on efforts to remain one of the world’s most lucrative media businesses. “As the world’s largest creative playground, YouTube is where trends are born and where you can draw inspiration from. Imagine hearing a line of dialogue that sparks an idea — a funny phrase, a memorable quote, or a one-of-a-kind sound — and you want to remix it into a new sound,” Dina Berrada, YouTube’s director of Product, Shorts and Generative AI Creation, wrote in a blog post.

“Twenty years ago, YouTube launched with the idea that everyone should have the opportunity to create and find a global stage. Since then, we’ve seen creators shape culture and entertainment in ways we never thought possible,” Johanna Voolich, YouTube’s chief product officer, said.

YouTube also revealed it has paid out over $100 billion to creators, artists and media companies since 2021, up from $70 billion distributed through 2024. The number of YouTube Channels earning more than $100,000 from connected TVs has surged by 45 per cent year-over-year (YoY), as per the company.

Over 20 billion videos, including music, Shorts, and podcasts, have been uploaded on YouTube since its launch in 2005.
