OpenAI’s ChatGPT, the generative AI model that took the internet by storm, has witnessed a staggering 10 per cent decline in its traffic for the first time. According to data from Similarweb, there is a sharp decline in both mobile and website traffic, indicating a reduction in the usage of AI-powered tools and services by OpenAI.

A report by The Washington Post reveals that ChatGPT’s traffic decreased by 9.7 per cent in June, encompassing both app and website traffic. Additionally, data from Sensor Tower indicates a significant drop in ChatGPT app downloads on iOS compared to early June.

ChatGPT is hailed as the next big thing on the internet, harnessing the power of generative AI to deliver human-like responses that can generate computer code, write essays, and could even pass professional tests. OpenAI even collaborated with Microsoft to bring ChatGPT into the mainstream, resulting in a new version of the Edge browser with free access to OpenAI’s latest language model, GPT-4.

Furthermore, ChatGPT has been integrated into numerous apps and services to enhance efficiency and provide improved experiences. Many companies have also replaced employees with AI chatbots powered by GPT, resulting in cost-cutting measures. However, the decline in ChatGPT traffic suggests that businesses and users may have recognized the limitations of AI bots, leading to a significant decline shortly after its official launch.

ChatGPT achieved a remarkable feat by adding over 100 million users in just two months, positioning it as one of the fastest-growing consumer apps. This development prompted Google to amplify its efforts in building its own generative AI model called Bard. Amidst these developments, certain companies like Samsung have chosen to prohibit the usage of ChatGPT for official work.
