But the former India captain, now leading Chennai Super Kings in the absence of Ruturaj Gaikwad, continues to inspire other players.
Even as he struggles to get going this season, Kolkata Knight Riders batsman Rinku Singh revealed some advice he received from Dhoni. Speaking to Jio Hotstar, the 27-year-old said: “I usually bat at No. 5 or 6 — I’ve done that for UP and in the IPL, so I’m used to it. I focus a lot on fitness because, with 14 matches in the IPL, it’s my responsibility to maintain my body and recover well. I also speak to Mahi Bhai often — he tells me to stay calm and play according to the match situation. Things fall into place when you stay composed.”

In eight matches so far this season, Rinku has scored only 133 runs at an average of 33.25 and a strike rate of 146.15. His poor form has coincided with KKR’s struggles, as the former champions continue to languish at the seventh spot with just three wins.

Rinku, hoping to find his scoring touch, added he observes and learns from players like Andre Russell. “I’ve been learning since I started playing in the IPL. I observe Russell closely, especially how he bats in the final overs, and how he uses his body to generate power. I keep watching and picking up things from him,” he said.
He further said that the 300-run mark will be breached sooner than later, given how teams are frequently completing high run-chases successfully. “Yes, we can do it,” he said when asked if a 300-run total is possible. “IPL has reached a stage where even 300 is possible; last year, Punjab chased a total of 262 runs. All teams are strong this season—anyone can get to 300.”
