Synopsis: MI break records with highest chase in Wankhede as Jaiswal’s ton goes in vain after hosts batting might comes to the fore.
IPL 2023 MI vs RR: Mumbai Indians celebrated the 1000th IPL game with a six-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals, becoming the first side to successfully chase over 200 runs at the Wankhede Stadium. Needing 17 off the final over, Tim David smashed three consecutive sixes off Jason Holder to register a famous win.
Chasing 213, the Mumbai batsmen had no option but to keep their foot on the pedal throughout the innings. They kept going after the bowling which made the historic feat possible and gave the hosts their fourth win of the season, keeping them in the hunt for a playoff spot.
Surya shines bright in the chase
Suryakumar Yadav has blown hot and cold this season. However, on Sunday, he showed how dangerous he can be when in full flow. Despite being in discomfort while running between the wickets, the stylish batsman played some splendid shots. His 55-run knock off 29 balls involved his trademark scoops and cover drives. After Surya’s departure, Tilak Varma and Tim David’s 63-run stand under pressure took Rohit Sharma & Co home.
Birthday boy Rohit could not a make huge impact on the chase as he was deceived by a slower ball from Sandeep Sharma. However, Cameron Green and Ishan Kishan had a timely partnership and laid the foundation for the power-hitters to follow.
Jaiswal slams a ton
The young left-hander packed a punch against the five-time champions with a blistering ton. The 21-year-old showed his class in the Powerplay with his timing and then when the field was spread, he displayed his power game to the Mumbai crowd. Despite wickets falling at the other end, Jaiswal did not panic and showed excellent temperament throughout the knock.
However, the rest of the batting order struggled to support the youngster as the next highest scorer for Rajasthan Royals was 25, scored by extras. Jaiswal’s opening partner Jos Buttler after starting the tournament well has gone of the boil in the last few games. The Englishman struggled with his timing once again and fell for 18 after a 72-run opening stand.
Skipper Sanju Samson after smashing a six off the first ball on a good surface could not get going either. Devdutt Padikkal followed in his skipper’s footsteps immediately after. The experiment of sending Jason Holder up the order did not work either.
Mumbai’s bowling put to the sword
Asked to bowl first by Samson, the Mumbai bowlers struggled to restrict the opposition again. Despite picking up regular wickets, the they conceded 70 runs in the last five overs. Jofra Archer, making a comeback into the side, lacked rhythm in the beginning, but improved thereafter. He also picked the wicket of Holder with a slower one.
Riley Meredith had a forgettable outing as he could not hit his lines and lengths. Arshad Khan, replacing Arjun Tendulkar, had a bittersweet game as he gave 39 runs from three overs but picked up three important wickets. Cameron Green, opening the bowling, was the victim of Jaiswal’s assault in the Powerplay. However, after a productive first six overs, it was old fox Piyush Chawla who once again brought the hosts back into the game by breaking the opening partnership.
Ashwin the lone warrior
In a high-scoring affair, off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin showed all his experience. He varied his pace nicely deceiving set batsmen Ishan Kishan and Green and in the process became the second bowler to go past 300 T20 wickets after his spin twin Yuzvendra Chahal. However, he did not get much support from the rest of the bowling attack.
