Kumar Sanu files Rs 30 lakh defamation suit against ex-wife Rita Bhattacharya

Kumar Sanu’s legal team has maintained that all allegations made against him are false. The suit reportedly also refers to a consent clause in their 2001 divorce agreement, finalised at the Bandra Family Court, which stipulated that neither party would make allegations against the other in the future.

What are the allegations made against Kumar Sanu?

Apart from alleging that Kumar Sanu had an affair with actress Kunickaa Sadanand, Rita Bhattacharya, in an interview with Film Window, spoke about her personal experiences during their marriage.

“I never thought we should separate. I was a mother of two kids, and my husband became very successful—beyond one’s imagination. I never stepped out of the house. I wasn’t allowed. I wasn’t allowed to go to the parlour or even get waxed,” she claimed.

She further alleged emotional and mental distress during her pregnancy, saying, “I lost my father when I was pregnant with Jaan. The limits of torture were crossed. Sanu took me to court on the grounds of cruelty. I want to ask—someone who got married in 1986, won so many awards, had a huge bungalow, luxuries, two children and another on the way—what cruelty could I have inflicted? He became a legend and still took me to court on grounds of cruelty?”

Earlier, Kunickaa Sadanand’s son had also addressed the rumours surrounding his mother’s alleged relationship with Kumar Sanu. Speaking to Siddharth Kannan, he said, “When I noticed she was singing his songs at home all day—I’m kidding—but she genuinely adores him as a singer and still sings his songs. People say the affair lasted 27 years, but what she actually meant was that she was 27 years old when it happened. The relationship lasted a few years, and she had me when she was 35.”

He added, “She truly loved the artiste. She doesn’t love the man anymore—I can promise that. My mother isn’t obsessive; it’s not an ego thing. When I once googled him and asked her about it, she said, ‘He was a very important man in my life. I considered him my soulmate. Everyone should experience that kind of love once in their life.’ It was toxic—very, very toxic.”

Despite having three children together, Kumar Sanu and Rita Bhattacharya separated in 1994 after eight years of marriage. The singer went on to remarry in 2001.
