The Yashasvi Jaiswal bandwagon is the hottest in Test cricket right now. Having made his debut only last year in July, the southpaw has quickly earned his stripes, already boasting five triple digit scores that includes two double hundreds.

On Thursday, in the fifth Test against England distanced himself as the leading run scorer in the ongoing five-match series, crossing the 700 run mark. By doing so, Jaiswal broke former India captain Virat Kohli’s record for most runs in a Test series against England – 655 from the 2016/17 home series.

Jaiswal also became only the second Indian after Sunil Gavaskar to score more than 700 runs in a single Test series. The former India captain had done so twice during his career, both against the West Indies – 774 (1971/72) and 732 (1978-79).

The swashbuckling opener also has the opportunity to become the all-time leading run scorer, surpassing Gavaskar, with one more possible innings left to be played in the series.

Coming in to bat after the spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Ravichandran Ashwin ran riot – splitting nine wickets between each other – bundling England out for 218, Jaiswal smashed a 58-ball-57 before he fell to Shoaib Bashir.

In doing so, Jaiswal also became the joint-third quickest to score 1000 Test runs as an opener (16 innings), one less than what Indian captain Rohit Sharma took to cross the same landmark.

At the end of the first day’s play in Dharamsala, Rohit (52*) stood in the middle alongside Shubman Gill (26*) as India trailed by 83 runs in the first innings.
