Batters’ blitzkrieg power India to fastest fifty, fastest hundred and fastest two hundred in Test cricket history

The Indian innings began with Jaiswal collecting three successive boundaries from Hasan Mahmud's first over. It was followed by Rohit Sharma taking the gear up a notch with consecutive maximums off his first two deliveries.

After the bowlers restricted Bangladesh to 233 in the second session of Day 4 in Kanpur, the Indian openers combined to score the fastest team fifty in Test cricket history on Monday.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal brought up the team milestone off just 18 deliveries, beating the previous best record set by England (26 balls) earlier this year against West Indies in Nottingham.

At the end of the third over, while Jaiswal had pounded 30 runs off 13 deliveries, Rohit Sharma had contributed 19 runs off his 16 deliveries.

England West Indies 26 Trent Bridge, Nottingham 2024
England South Africa 27 The Oval, London 1994

Sri Lanka Pakistan 32 Karachi 2004

The Indian innings began with Jaiswal collecting three successive boundaries from Hasan Mahmud’s first over. It was followed by Rohit Sharma taking the gear up a notch with consecutive maximums off his first two deliveries.

The third over of the innings though, was the most expensive as Mahmud leaked 22 runs, which included two fours and as many sixes.

The partnership was eventually broken in the fourth over as Mehidy Hasan Miraz cleaned up Rohit. Jaiswal went on to score his second half-century of the series, ending up with 72 runs off just 51 balls.

The hosts finished the second session of the day at 138/2 after 16 overs with Shubman Gill (37) and Rishabh Pant (4) – centurions in the Chennai Test – unbeaten in the middle, with India trailing by 95 runs.

Later, while Jaiswal continued with his aggressive approach, No. 3 Shubman Gill also joined in to punish the Bangladesh bowlers as India crossed the triple-figure mark in 10.1 overs, improving their own record.

India had recorded the fastest century for any team in terms of overs faced when they went past the 100-run mark in 12.2 overs against the West Indies at Port of Spain in 2023.

India opted for an all-out approach with the bat in reply to Bangladesh’s 233 all out in the first innings as KL Rahul’s 43-ball 68 and Virat Kohli’s brisk 47 later on helped them breach the 200-run mark in a mere 24.2 overs, which is the quickest for any team yet.

India broke Australia’s record for the fastest 200, who had set it against Pakistan during the Sydney Test in 2017.

India eventually declared their innings at the fall of the penultimate wicket, at 285 for nine from only 34.4 overs, having scored their runs at 8.22 per over.
