IND U-19 vs ENG U-19 2nd Youth Test Day 4 Highlights: India bat out draw in Chelmsford

The umpires were out on the field all this time, chatting with the ground staff. Then they suddenly rush to the stumps, uproot them, leave them flat on the ground and exit. The ground staff come in with the covers. Chances of any more play seem quite miniscule now. 

Umpires whip out the light metre, look at the reading, shake their heads and ask the players to head off the field. But it is not the end yet. It is a pause in play for now due to bad light. 

India 290/6

That early sixathon has now given way to a fight for draw. Forward defence and leaves are the order of the day and England need four wickets to win. The batter at the non striker's end is looking at the umpire after every ball is delivered almost. 

England are five wickets away. The umpires have now taken the light metre out. It is starting to look pretty dark out there. A slight break in play and it continues but thus match seems to be in its last leg now. A draw becoming increasingly likely with every passing over. 

Kundu falls the very next over to Albert and then Rahul Kumar spoons a simple catch back to the bowler Mayes off the 2nd ball of the over after that. 

The batters run two off the next ball and at the end of that over, India are 234/5, need 121 to win

He dies by the sword he lived by. Mhatre goes for a big slog sweep off the fourth ball of the 27th over by Albert and is caught. He falls for 126 off 80 balls. 

India 217/3 

The run rate remains above a cool eight runs an over. Mhatre is on 116 off 71, Kundu on 56 off 38. India need 149 to win. 

Kundu has ensured that he keeps up with his captain at the other end. He hits two sixes off Albert in the 20th over and Kundu finishes it on 43 in 25 balls. This partnership has produced 65 runs in 37 balls and India are 165/2 in 20 overs. Which is a properly competitive score in a T20 context, let alone red-ball cricket. The target is now within 200 runs, they need 192 to win. Quite extraordinary display of batting here. 

Can Ayush Mhatre keep this up is the big question. Ralphie Albert to bowl the first over of the session, Kundu is on strike. 

Well, how about that for a session. It was smash and grab for much of the second half of it with the England batters trying to get as much as possible towards the end of their innings and then Ayush Mhatre blazing 73 in 43 balls. He has a strike rate of 169.76. Abhigyan Kundu is the new batter at the other end, he has about five runs in six balls. 

Mhatre is on 72 off 42, which would've been a good score even if this was a T20 match. The partnership has been broken but it is Malhotra who falls, not Mhatre. he has scored 27 in 39 balls, which is a good strike rate but absolute peanuts compared to what Mhatre has been doing at the other end. 

India 100/2 in 13.5 overs

A half-century in 25 balls for Ayush Mhatre. He has been blazing away and it almost looks like he wants to finish this chase off today itself. The rain forecast might have some role to play in this approach. 

Mhatre finishes the ninth over on 55 off 27 balls, Malhotra on 15 off 26. 

India 71/1 in 9 overs

The Indian captain is off to a flying start here. He has smashed 30 runs in 14 balls thus far, with five fours and one six. Vihaan Malhotra at the other end playing a slightly different kind of innings, he has scored nine runs in 21 balls. 

India are 40/1, need 315 to win

In steams Green for the first ball of the Indian second innings. Short, Suryavanshi goes for a big expansive pull, it takes his bottom edge and crashes onto his stumps. Suryavanshi stands around in disbelief for a few seconds and then walks off. A horror start for India. 

They had adopted a devil-may-care attitude and so it did look like a declaration was around the corner. Ekansh Singh had blasted 20 runs in six balls, Aaryan Sawant at the other end on 13 off six. England have gone at a whopping 9.80 runs an over in the last 10 overs. 

Sawant hits a six and four off Rawat's first two balls in that over, then takes a single after which Flintoff hits back to back fours, with the first one off a no ball. He then perishes going for another big one, having made 32 in 18 balls. These England kids have decided to go the Bazball way now. 

England 304/5 in 61 overs

Pushpak with the big wicket. Dawkin has played quite an epic innings here and he falls after scoring 136 in 184 balls. Dawkins tried to go for a boundary, big mow over mid-on and is caught. 

England 282/4 

Ambrish gets clobbered for sixes off the fifth and sixth balls of the 56th over. Then he hits a four off the last ball of Ambrish's next over. Flintoff is sitting on 23 off 13 at the end of the 59th over, Dawkins on 135 off 182. 

England are 280/3, lead by 310 runs. 

Aditya Rawat strikes again for India and it is Thomas Rew who falls this time. He goes for 19 off 15 and now out comes Rocky Flintoff to replace him. BJ Dawkins at the other end on 122 off 170. 

England 244/3, lead by 278

Aditya Rawat, who picked two quick wickets before Lunch, continued in the second session as well. Joining him from the other end was RS Ambrish. No real change in intent from England; they are still looking for quick runs. 

ENG 235/2 in 54 overs

Okay, we're back! The players are coming into the middle as we will get to see some live action pretty soon. 

RS Ambrish bowled the last over before lunch and gave nine off it including which included a maximum by captain Thomas Rew. England lead by 256 runs after ending the first session at 226/2. The run rate is well above four and with still 77 overs left in the day, the hosts can fancy a win here. 10-15 more overs, can look for something above 320 and then give their bowlers 60 overs to bowl India out. This could very well be the scenario when we head back for the next two sessions. 

ENG 226/2 in 52 overs at Lunch 

Century for Ben Dawkins! Juicy full toss on offer from Vaibhav Suryavanshi on off, he gets to the line of the ball and places it towards extra covers for a boundary, which takes him to 103! A fine knock from the young batter who has looked in complete control. The boundary also takes England to 200. High-on-confidence Dawkins then charges down the ground against Suryavanshi to hit him down the ground for a straight six. He ends the over with a four. 

ENG 213/1 in 50 overs

Wicket! Against the run of play for India but they will take from both hands. Aditya Rawat was bowling from over the wicket, looks to get some zip and bounce from that angle against the right-hander. Bowled one the 8 metre length and cramped Thomas who could not figure out where to defend or go for his shot, and the batter ended up nudging it to give an easy return catch to the bowler. Ben Mayes is the new man in at No. 3. 

ENG 188/1 in 47 overs

England's lead surges past 200, and they are yet to lose any wickets. This has been a really commanding start from the England openers. They have kept the Indian attack on toes and now they can look to go even harder and think of a target to give their bowlers. Still 86 overs to be bowled and the hosts look in a really good position. 

ENG 171/0 in 43 overs

After the 16-run over from Naman Pushpak, India Colts wasted no time in changing the attack, from both ends. RS Ambrish and Henil Patel took over from Naman and Aditya Rawat and have bowled with better control. The duo didn't let Dawkins and Thomas get easy runs in the last few overs. India would fancy a few more tight overs to create more pressure. 

ENG 146/0 in 37 overs 

England colts have come with a clear cut plan today. With stil over 95 overs to be bowled today (to compensate the overs lost in the last three days due to rain), they are looking to score and came with a very positive intent. They want to set India a tricky target and look to bowl them out, perhpaps in the last two sessions. India in dire need of a wicket. Naman Pushpak, the highest-wicket taker for India in the first innings came to bowl and Dawkins dismantled him by charging down at him on multiple ocassion. He hit a couple of sixes before getting a boundary. 

ENG 137/0 in 33 overs 

No real assist for the bowlers off the Day 4 pitch at the County Ground in Chelmsford. Both Dawkins and Thomas look very comfortable against the Indian pace attack at the moment. After starting the day with a single, Thomas didn't have to wait for his first boundary as he hit Aditya Rawat for a flashy drive in the very first over of the day. Runs continue to come in easy for the host as they went past 100 from their overnight score of 93 in the first over. Dawkins then get to his fifty as well.

For the first time in the second Youth Test, we have an on-time start. No rain threat as of now. Overnight unbeaten openers, Ben Dawkinds and Adam Thomas continue for England. Aditya Rawat to start the day for India with the ball. All set!

Welcome back, everyone, to the live coverage of Day 4 of India U-19 vs England U-19 2nd Youth Test happening at the County Ground in Chelmsford on Wednesday. In reply to England's 309 in the first innings, India managed 279 in their first innings thanks to a fine century by No. 3 batter Vihaan Malhotra. England, reply, posted 93/0 at Stumps.

A day to largely forget for India. They dominated the first session but it has been England all the way since then. India lost as many as nine wickets in the second session after which BJ Dawkins and Adam Thomas inflated England's lead to 123 as they stayed alive till the end of the day. The hosts were 93/0 at Stumps.

Ayush Mhatre could be seen having a lengthy conversation with the umpires before gesturing to his teammates that it's back on. The England batters also walk out and take their places. Kanishk Chauhan to continue. 

England 80/0 in 20 overs, lead by 110. 

There are pretty prominent shadows on the ground at the moment and the umpires call the players off the ground. There are about 22 overs left to be bowled but chances are that we won't get all of them. The opening partnership between Dawkins and Thomas is on 80 in 20 overs. England lead by 110. 

Naman Pushpak introduced to the attack while Henil Patel has bowled six overs thus far. It will be quite worrying for India that they have hardly had a look at a wicket thus far. Dawkins and Thomas almost chanceless. 

India's pacers have put their backs into it and there have been a few close calls. But all in all, BJ Dawkins and Adam Thomas have done well to see off the first 10 overs of the new ball. Dawkins has scored nine in 35 balls, Thomas is on 18 in 25. 

England 27/0 in 10 overs

Here are BJ Dawkins and Adam Thomas to open for England in their second innings. Henil Patel starts the attack for India. England effectively start on 30/0 with India falling 30 runs short in their first innings. The hosts have all the momentum coming into this session. 

And that's that! India started this session with nine wickets in hand and they have lost nine of them over the course of it. The umpires have called Tea. Ralphie Albert's session through and through. He finishes with figures of 6/53. 

No wickets in the first session. Eight wickets in the second. India have collapsed in a heap here and now, it is Aditya Rawat who walks for the last wicket stand with Kanish Chouhan. 

He tries to go for a big one and is caught at the boundary. Malhotra falls for 120 off 122 balls and the England players engulf Ralphie Albert, who has taken his fifth wicket. 

India 253/7 in 47 overs, trail by 56 runs

Ambrish is the third man to fall for a duck. India have lost as many as five wickets inside this session so far. A proper collapse now. Malhotra standing at the other end on 119 off as many balls. 

India 252/6

Albert is the next man to strike and Pangalia goes for 28 off 34. He tries a hook, skies the shot and is caught. This brings on RS Ambrish, who was the standout with the ball earlier. This is quite a collapse from India though. 

He gers there with a four, driven square to the boundary. Malhotra has brought up his century in 101 balls, in fact, that four takes him to 103 in 101 balls. What an innings this has been. 

India 228/4, trail by 81 runs

Harvansh Pangalia at the other end has stayed alive after India lost yet another wicket soon fter Kundu to make it three for the session. Rahul Kumar also fell for a duck but Pangalia has been out there for 13 balls and scored 12 runs. Malhotra, at the other end, is on 94 off 96. 

India 210/4 

Abhigyan Kundu gone for a duck after spooning the easiest of return catches to bowler Ralphie Albert. Kundu was left in no man's land, seemed to pull out of a hook shot and ended up just offering a flat bat to the ball. Almost catching practice. 

India 171/3

Alex French with the breakthrough England have been desperate for. Clean through him. The fifth ball of the 30th over from French sent in on a good length, angling into the right hander. Mhatre went for a lofted shot over long on probably but missed it entirely. 

He falls for 80 off 90. 

India 170/2

All right Here are Mhatre and Malhotra, with the former on strike. Ralphie Albert continues for his second over. Can England stop this deluge of runs? 

It seems to be more of a precaution than anything else. No rain around at the moment and the ground staff are standing right at the pitch after putting the cover in place, instead of running for shelter. 

Well this was quite the session for India. Mhatre finishes it on 79 off 80 balls, 14 fours and a six. Vihaan Malhotra on 57 off 64 balls, nine fours and two sixes. India's run rate at the end of this session reads 6.11. Absolutely dominant. 

Both players haver raised fifties and they are metting out quite a pasting at the moment to Minto and French. India are rattling along at over six runs an over at the moment. England are being put through the ringer. 

Minto fires the last ball of the 17th over at short of a length around off. It keeps coming in with the angle to Vihaan Malhotra and he is completely cramped for room. He hopped in order to get on top of the bounce and it looks like the ball struck him on the fingers of his bottom hand. 

He gets some attention from the physio and seems good to go. French continues. Malhotra on 27 off 41, Mhatre on 40 off 48. 

India 89/1 in 17 overs

Ayush Mhatre has raced to 34 in 39 and he has just picked up where he left off yesterday. Meanwhile, England have introduced James Minto into the attack in the 15th over, with Alex French being taken off. 

At long last, the umpires take their places, so do the fielders and tbe batter. Malhotra on strike on six off 14, captain Mhatre at the other end on 24 off 26. It looks like the two Alexes will continue, with Alex Green bowling the first over of the day and continuing his spell. One can expect French to be steaming in from the other after this. 

India 51/1 

It is dry and the sun is shining. The covers have been removed and the umpires have walked out. It looks like we are moments away from the start of the day. 

Alright, so we have some update. The Day 3 will have a delayed start due to rain so we have to wait for a little while before we get to see some live action. Stay tuned!
