India’s winning streak ended on eight ODIs when they lost the first match of this series by seven wickets. Moreover, it was also Shubman Gill’s first match as captain in the format and a comeback game for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. With all these factors in mind, the visitors would be desperate to turn things around in the second ODI at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday.

The first ODI was distrupted by rain, reducing the affair to a 26-overs-a-side match. Rohit and Kohli, along with Shubman Gill, were dismissed before the first rain delay though and the Indian top three will be looking to make amends. While there is no forecast yet for rain in Adelaide on the day of the match yet, the state of South Australia of which the city is the capital is generally expected to be lashed by strong winds and lightening in the days leading up to it.

Here’s a look at all the details

Team IND predicted XI: Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill (c), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj

Key player to watch out for: Virat Kohli did fall going for a drive in the first ODI but the fact remains that it was also due to a very good catch by Cooper Connolly at backward point. The Adelaide Oval was famously a happy hunting ground for Kohli in Test cricket and the same is the case for him in ODIs. The former India captain has played only four ODIs here and scored centuries in two of them. He has 244 runs in four matches at an average of 61. The last time he played an ODI was in January 2019, which was when Kohli was at the absolute peak of his powers but one could argue that he never really properly fell off in ODIs, considering he had one of his most productive years in the format only recently in 2023. Kohli would be desperate to prove that he remains a force to be reckoned with and the fact that he fell for a duck in the previous match would only make him more dangerous for the Australians.

AUS predicted XI: Mitchell Marsh (c), Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne, Josh Inglis (wk), Mitchell Owen, Alex Carey, Cooper Connolly, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Ellis, Xavier Bartlett.

Key player to watch out for: Mitchell Marsh has been brilliant form in the white-ball set-up. He won player of the match in the first ODI for his almost chanceless knock which helped Australia over the line quite comfortably. In the ODI that they played before that, albeit after a series defeat, Marsh cracked a century against South Africa and so did the rest of the Aussie top-order. Marsh also whipped up a special ton in a T20I chase against New Zealand and could pose problems to the relatively inexperienced Indian seam attack.
