The business partner of Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) leader Anil Parab, Sadanand Kadam was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a case of alleged money laundering connected to the Sai Resort in Dapoli in Ratnagiri on Friday.

Sadanand is a younger brother of Ramdas Kadam, a former minister who has switched over to the Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The siblings are known to have had major differences over the past few years. Sources said that when Ramdas became a minister for the first time in the 1998-2004 Shiv Sena-BJP government, he helped Sadanand grow his business in the region. During the same time, Sadanand started developing close relations with Parab. But the differences between the siblings started to grow.

After the split in the party engineered by Shinde, Ramdas switched over to the ruling faction but Sadanand stayed with Parab. Many in the Shiv Sena (UBT) linked Sadanand’s arrest to his links with Parab and his decision to not join Shinde as his brother did.

During Uddhav’s recent visit to Khed, which is Ramdas’s constituency, he hit out at Shinde and the BJP. At the time, Sadanand and his family members met Uddhav and felicitated him. At this rally in Khed, former Sena MLA Sanjay Kadam (unrelated to the brothers), joined Thackeray and took on Ramdas. Insiders said Sanjay Kadam’s entry into the Shiv Sena (UBT) was facilitated by Sadanand. Five days later, Sadanand was arrested.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut alleged on Saturday that Sadanand was being targeted for the success of Uddhav’s rally in Khed, which saw a large turnout. “Sadanand is with UBT and had organised a rally of Uddhav ji in Khed which was a success. He has been arrested because of that,” Raut said.

MLA Yogesh Kadam, Ramdas’s son, however, said his uncle’s arrest should not be linked with their family rivalry and added that if he was involved in irregularities he should face the consequences. “There is no need to link the arrest with our family. If he has done something irregular and tried to hide documents from agencies, he should accept it. That should be the end of the topic,” Yogesh said.
